John HARNEY, Saucers and Science: Where Did It All Go Wromg? There are several reasons why the scientific community refuses to treat UFO reports very seriously and a discussion of them could prove enlightening. John Harney begins by asking the question: When reports of strange aerial phenomena first attracted wide public attention in then USA in 1947, why were the most detailed and best-witnessed of these reports not simply subjected to critical analysis in an attempt to explain them? pp.3-6

John HARNEY, IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TONIGHT - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN THE SITGREAVES NATIONAL FOREST, ARIZONA? Some UFO stories have been exposed as hoaxes, and others can easily be explained as hoaxes. lt is often difficult, though, to persuade most ufologists that a particular story is a hoax, because, as they want to believe the story, they fail to notice or deliberately ignore false assertions or logical contradictions in the story as it is presented to them. Sceptics, on the other hand, too often seem to take the view that the details don't really matter, and that if the alleged witnesses had obvious motives for hoaxing then that must be the explanation. An excellent example of a UFO event where investigators failed to get to the heart of the matter because they were too busy pursuing their own agendas was the alleged abduction of Travis Walton in the Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona, on 5 November 1975. pp.8-10

Martin KOTTMEYERAlienating Fancies
In part one of this article, MARTIN KOTTMEYER looked at the development of the belief in "influencing machines" controlling human behaviour as expressed in the early literature of ufology and the extraterrestrial mythos. Here he continues his review to examine the theme in the work of contemporary writers

Kevin McCLUREBogeymen
This article is a pretty angry assessment of the potential damage arising from what I regard as the myth of alien abduction. In it I quote substantially from the published works of four named researchers, including interviews with two of them. These four are David Jacobs, Budd Hopkins, John Mack and Jenny Randles, probably the most influential writers and researchers in the field at present. It is because of their importance that I have chosen to quote from their work, but there are plenty of others to whom my comments could be addressed

Peter BURGEROrgan Snatchers
For almost ten years a horrible story has haunted the world's media: in Latin America children are robbed of their kidneys and corneas for the benefit of wealthy Americans. On closer examination these horror stories turn out to be based on rumours and legends. Organ-napping: the contemporary version of an age-old and universally known legend.

The Godlings Descend
In Iudalsm, Christianity and Islam, God may represent the overwhelming power of lovlngklndness, but he Is also the primordial creative force, the prlmum mobile, and the control ler of all things. And so - as the canonical texts make plain - God Is also the source and ultimate embodiment of all evil. In the second part of this series, PETER BROOKESMITH shows how the ambiguities of the omniscient Master of the Universe are reflected In UFO lore

Peter BROOKESMITHPlague of Aliens: Visionary Rumour As Contemporary And Costume Drama
The current expression of conspiracy beliefs in ufology operates at two levels. The overarching theme is an essential conviction that those in power are in some way colluding with alien visitors - whether through secret treaties or simply by exploiting recovered alien technology - to the detriment of humanity. Specific 'evidence' of dark deeds and darker intentions on the port of government - such as threatening visits by block helicopters, the USAF's stance on the Roswell affair, and the refusal of Juan Perez do Cuello to admit he was once abducted wearing blue pyjamas - spangles a backcloth of improbable allegations that is part ufological rumour, part political nightmare.

Peter ROGERSONDeep Secrets
Shortly before his untimely death our colleague Roger Sandell had planned to write a major article on the growing influence of conspiracy theories and fusion paranoia. If anything, since his death conspiracy theories have come in even further from their ancient home on the wilder shores of politics, into the cultural mainstream. They form the core of such cult television series as The X-Files and Dark Skies, to say nothing of the numerous commercial spin-offs. Recent issues of both Fortean Times and Big Issue, the magazine sold by the homeless, have features articles 'proving' that the Apollo moon landings were faked.

Mark PILKINGTONOn Track with British Rael
It’s not every day that you’re given the chance to meet an extraterrestrial ambassador, but that’s what the colourful British Raelian Foundation posters were offering early last April. The Rael Foundation was founded in 1973 by French motor-racing journalist Claude Vorlihon (now Rael) and claims to be the largest UFO organisation in the world, with 35,000 members in 85 countries. So it was with a reasonably open mind and a hopeful heart that myself and two friends made our way to the tacky Bayswater hotel lounge where this remarkable opportunity was due to take place. Things got strange as soon as I entered the toilets, where the pop superstar Prince was applying foundation to h is cheeks whilst chatting to a female assistant. I soon established that this couldn't really be Prince because he's famously always surrounded by bodyguards. So I assumed that there must be a party going on in another part of the hotel; it was, after all, a Saturday afternoon. And I was right, but I didn't know that I too was going to be thereritish-rael.html

David SIVIERCrashed Cups. An Interim Response to Peter Brookesmith
In issues 54-6 of this magazine, the erudite Peter Brookesmith ran the first two of a three-part article entitled Communion Cups and Crashed Saucers. Therein, he attempted to locate the origin of the saucer mythos squarely within Western religious experience, particularly that of the 'American Religion'. It was an impressive piece. Brookesmith is an elegant writer with a deep understanding of the scientific and religious issues. He applies Occam' s razor with almost surgical skill. Moreover, he is not afraid of courting controversy. In this case he savagely attacked the Semitic religions supposed psychological evils, using Hyam Maccoby' s Judas Iscariot and the Myth of Jewish Evil to castigate Christianity in particular with its antisemitic past. It was heady, pungent, hard-hitting material.

Matthew J. GRAEBERA Fatal Illusion
The image of the alien in UFO culture has generally been dominated by an entity with a large, bald head. Usually the being is small compared to humans. Often the limbs and torso are described as thinner or more slender, but the more closely universal rule is that such aliens are never fat or obese. Current convention labels all approximations to this stereotypical ufonaut with the term Greys. Ostensibly this is because of the greyish skin tones usually being associated with this body type. In practice, absence of this defining trait does not inhibit use of the label so long as a big bald head appears somewhere in the description.

John HARNEYSaucers and Science: Where Did It All Go Wromg?
There are several reasons why the scientific community refuses to treat UFO reports very seriously and a discussion of them could prove enlightening. John Harney begins by asking the question: When reports of strange aerial phenomena first attracted wide public attention in then USA in 1947, why were the most detailed and best-witnessed of these reports not simply subjected to critical analysis in an attempt to explain them?

Twenty Five Years Ago2

Gareth J. MEDWAYTHE CASE FOR FENCE SITTING - part 2
Over the past half a century there have been hundreds of books, to say nothing of articles, purporting to solve "The UFO question". The answers vary (and conflict, of course), but they are usually alike in that they consist of something that could easily be summarised in a few words, whether "They come from Zeta Reticuli", or "Weather balloons". The bulk of this writing is polemical, the author wanting to convince the reader of a particular theory, and selecting and arranging the material accordingly. So far as one can tell, it almost never succeeds. Instead, for the most part, it is read by people who already share the author's opinion, and want to be confirmed in their views; and this is as true of what appears in Magonia as what appears in UFO Magazine
3-7

John HARNEYIF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TONIGHT - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN THE SITGREAVES NATIONAL FOREST, ARIZONA?

The classic Victorian ghost story, the ghost story to end all ghost stories began in April 1882 when a retired army captain of Irish extraction, Frederick William Despard (53), his 46 year old second wife Harriet Ann (nee Nixon), ' a great invalid', and his teenage children, 19 year old Rosina Clara, Edith Sophia was about to turn 18, 15 year old Henry, 13 year old lilian, 12 year old Mabel, and their little brother Wilfrid, 9, moved house. They moved from Lansdown Road in Cheltenham, the town where they had been living for the previous half dozen or so years to another rented house at Pittville Circus Road on the corner of All Saints Road a 'typical modern residence, square and commonplace in appearance'

Martin KOTTMEYERHEADHUNT - Seeking the Degenerates among the Primitives (Varicose Brains - Part Three)
Flying saucers mostly just flew around when they arrived in 1947. They didn't land much and we did not see much of who was piloting them. Only 4 or 5 such cases have been found we might fairly term CE3Ks. This contrasts sharply with the Airship Waves of 1896/97 where researchers have found 36 detailed CE3Ks, at east 14 of which are explicitly extraterrestrial. A few more seem to be so implicitly

Curtis PEEBLESFIREFLIES dynamic pressure, and the X-15 UFO sightin
Between late November and mid-December 2001, the UFO UpDates Internet mailing-list saw an exchange of postings regarding the UFO sighting made by Maj. Robert White on his July 17, 1962 flight in an X-15. This provides a case study of belief, the interactions between believers and sceptics, how evidence is presented, and how it is accepted or rejected.
