Martin KOTTMEYERENGINE STOPPERS
Machines fail in the presence of UFOs. Car motors stall out. Lights dim and go out. Radios fill with static. Televisions display interference. Major electrical grids have even been known to black-out in the presence of UFOs. Such claims of inter action with the physical environment - often referred to as electromagnetic effects - have at times been felt by urologists to be one of the most compelling proofs that UFOs must be real in a material sense. Such claims can not be reduced to hallucination. And it is an effect that has been seen in literally hundreds of cases and hardly dismissible as the occasional random accident.

David SIVIERINDEXING THEN MACHINE ELVES: FAIRYTALE MOTIFS IN UFO NARRATIVES
One of the most fascinating developments in folklore has been its extension to include UFOs and abduction accounts. Since the rise of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH) much of the argument surrounding them has occurred within the domain of the physical and psychological sciences, examining the question of whether or not they can be considered as visiting alien craft, or, as earl Jung posited instead. they are 'a modern myth of things seen in the sky'. It is a debate whose basis in the hard sciences is epitomised in the title of Carl Sagan's and Thornton Page's book "UFOs - A Scientific Debate".

The 1948 Aztec, NM downed UFO retrieval story is one of saucerdom's legends that seems to have defied all the attempts to explain it away as a clumsy and very obvious hoax. However, the many "resurrections" of this story, n various forms, is just about as remarkable and interesting as the original tale itself. Frank John REIDCurtis Peebles, the X-15 and Angela’s Ashes
I'd just dragged myself through Frank McCourt's depressing "Angela's Ashes" when I read Curtis Peebles's "The Case of the Vanishing X-15 Pilot." I grew up Catholic in the 1940s and 50s, in an American Church that rather envied the holiness of Ireland. And so I was able to understand, for example, McCourt's reminiscence of rushing around Limerick, tearing one page out of an issue of "John O'London's Weekly" which his employer had earlier distributed, because that page discussed birth control. And so I was able to understand Peebles's article.

Curtis PEEBLESThe Case of the Vanishing X-15 Pilot
The publication of Ann Druffel's book, Firestorm: Dr. James M. McDonald,s Fight For UFO Science, was met with a mixed reception among believers and skeptics alike. The book gave an inside account of the highly respected atmospheric physicist's involvement with UFOs. At the same time, many readers objected to Druffel's attempts to include Roswell and MJ-12 in the account, as well as the book's technical and historical errors. McDonald's notebooks, in which he recorded his day-to-day activities formed the basis of the book. These notebooks included summaries of numerous phone calls, notes on trips, events in his struggle with the University of Colorado UFO study, headed by Dr. Edward U. Condon, and McDonald's efforts to arrange congressional hearings on UFOs.

David SIVIERThe Victorian Charm of the Protong
One of the strangest responses to the religious furore surrounding the release of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ in 2004 was that of veteran fringe writer, Stan Gooch. While other writers and academics feared that the graphic depiction of Christ's suffering would provoke a further rise in violent anti-Semitism amid a resurgence of extreme Right wing political groups in Europe, and the renewed intifada in the Arab world, Gooch took the opportunity of the film's release to expound his own, very personal theory that Christianity owed its origins to a secret lunar cult.

The word hippie conjures visions of brightly-clad young people rebelling against society whilst advocating peace, free love and the right to alter their consciousness when and how they chose. It's an appealing image, but one straight out of the imagination of a Daily Mail reader. For behind the fashions and fads, the hippie Underground movement in the UK was responsible for the greatest expansion of interest and belief in fortean phenomena in the last few centuries

The Fortean Times recently (September 2004) noted the death of Pierre Plantard, also known as Pierre Plantard de Saint-Clair, Count of Saint-Clair and Count of Rhedae, one time Grand Master of the Priory of Sion, who had passed on in 2000. The FT remarked that he was "either an incredibly important man or a huge dreamer and practical joker''. David SIVIERVisions Before Midnight. Witchcraft. Folklore and the Prehistory of the Abduction Phenomenon
Ever since Vallee and Keel put pen, or typewriter ribbon to paper in the 70s, it's been an axiom among proponents of the psychosocial hypothesis that the UFO phenomenon is merely the modem variant of a range of paranormal encounters and visitations by supernatural others. Despite their technological trappings, modem UFO sightings are merely the scientistic expression of deep religious and mystical impulses from within the human psyche, impulses, which have given rise to previous ages' myths of encounters with angels, demons, elves and ghosts.

Michael McHUGHAlien Mimicry in Popular Culture
If aliens ever came to earth to trade, raid or simply take pictures for Galactic Geographic magazine, it always seemed to me that they would do so by disguising themselves and their technology in such a way that they simply blended in with the natives as much as possible. Either that, or they would hire locals to do much of the work for them and act as guides and interpreters. Even on earth, people who need to work or do business in foreign countries do this all the time, and also try to learn something of the native language and customs before they go.

Mark NEWBROOKThe Aliens Speak - and Write
Many UFO reports involve linguistic or quasi-linguistic phenomena: scripts loosely resembling hieroglyphics or Indian devanagari associated with crashed UFOs, long stretches of 'speech channelled from alien entities or produced by self-described contactees, alleged telepathic messages with specific content, etc, etc. In the ufological literature, however, we seldom find any qualified linguistic analysis of the various claims and experiences.

For Forteans, it is axiomatic that the exclusion of the weird and the bizarre from the modern rationalistic weltanschauung began in the seventeenth century with the rise of institutional Science. Martin KOTTMEYERThe Alien Carried Paperwork
In March 1980, a young rural Pennsylvania couple was interviewed concerning an experience they shared aboard an alien craft. A person attending a lecture on UFOs given by Eugenie Macer-Story told her about the couple’s experiences. She travelled to their home – they had no telephone – and they cordially allowed her to tape the story of their encounters with the aliens. Frank and Alice had not contacted any UFO organisation and there was no use of hypnosis at any point preceding or during Macer-Story’s interview.

Let us take breath here and understand quite how dangerous Hopkins is now becoming. People have a natural tendency to fear the 'Other' and can be easily tempted to hate and fear anyone who seems just a little bit odd and different. Now the 'Other' are no longer safe on the spaceship, but down the road, where bricks and worse can be thrown through their window. Hopkins is licensing new forms of persecution.

About ten years ago, I coined the term "UFOOLOGY" in a letter to James "Jim" Moseley, who is the pubisher and editor of the nation's longest-running newsletter on the UFO enigma. Jim's Saucer Smear is legendary as a gossip and scandal sheet that has been exposing the intellectual short-comings and indiscretions of the self-appointed UFO experts, some of their "star-witnesses" and, of course, the UFO group leaders that have endorsed the rantings of these individuals

Matt GRAEBERThe Raefield Affair
In Magonia 78 (June 2002) Matt Graeber discussed a 'down-to-earth' variety of UFO experience that he called 'a dynamic display'. Graeber believes that such displays are "unique symbolic dramatisations" of the observer's personal life status at the time of their UFO encounter; and that the UFO event seems to reflect both the 'situational' and 'confrontational' character of the witness's problems. In this case study he takes another look at a dynamic display (or UFO 'self perception) that took place on a busy highway in broad daylight.

This article describes my attempts to trace an incident of 'time travel' or 'teleportation' that allegedly took place in New York many years ago. Mike McHUGHConspiracy Theory in American History
I was reading through the Feature Review on witchcraft books on the Magonia Website, where I was pleased to find a review of one of Robert Thurston's books. Thurston was one of my professors in graduate school and I was an assistant in one of his classes on Modern Russian H istory, which is his speciality. He always theorised that the Stalinist purges and show trials of the 1 930s were very similar to the witchcraft persecution of the 1 6th and 17th Centuries, in the sense that the masses really DID believe that agents of evil were at work in both cases: literal agents of the Devil in the witchcraft trials versus agents of Germany, Japan and other imperialist powers in the case of Stalin's Russia. In other words, the ruling elite did not simply orchestrate these situations, and even shared in the delusions themselves, in a mutually reinforcing cycle of paranoia.

It was interesting to read Magonia 74's Editorial Notes about the 1 970 Warminster photographic hoax, twenty five years after publication of 'Experimental' UFO Hoaxing in MUFOB New Series 2, and we thought that some background information, plus details of a couple of other UFO hoaxes might be of interest for the Hoax Special edition. As recorded in MUFOB (1 ), the photographic hoax was designed "to provide those watching on Cradle Hill with a simple visual stimulus, to introduce photographic evidence inconsistent with the stimulus and to observe the effect this evidence had on subsequent investigation, recording and publicity" - in other words to test the investigators who got involved

Ann DRUFFELREPLYING TO THE PELICAN - ANN DRUFFEL REPLIES TO THE PELICAN'S COMMENTS ABOUT DEFENDING YOURSELF AGAINST ALIEN ABDUCTIONS
IN MAGONIA issue 72 The Pelican wrote about my recent book, How to Defend Yourself Against Alien Abduction [1]. He also addressed a follow-up article in Flying Saucer Review in which I expressed my growing concern about the 'victim mentality' displayed by many so-called abductees [2]. Since certain top-profile abduction researchers in my own United States continue to ignore the subject of resistance techniques against 'alien abductors', I find it refreshing that English colleagues across the sea are interested in the growing evidence that stout-hearted experiencers can fight the abducting phenomenon (whatever it may be) and win. Over ninety such resisters are now in my database, and the number continues to rise
