Gareth J. MEDWAY, THE CASE FOR FENCE SITTING - part 2. Over the past half a century there have been hundreds of books, to say nothing of articles, purporting to solve "The UFO question". The answers vary (and conflict, of course), but they are usually alike in that they consist of something that could easily be summarised in a few words, whether "They come from Zeta Reticuli", or "Weather balloons". The bulk of this writing is polemical, the author wanting to convince the reader of a particular theory, and selecting and arranging the material accordingly. So far as one can tell, it almost never succeeds. Instead, for the most part, it is read by people who already share the author's opinion, and want to be confirmed in their views; and this is as true of what appears in Magonia as what appears in UFO Magazine pp.3-7

Kevin McCLUREBogeymen
This article is a pretty angry assessment of the potential damage arising from what I regard as the myth of alien abduction. In it I quote substantially from the published works of four named researchers, including interviews with two of them. These four are David Jacobs, Budd Hopkins, John Mack and Jenny Randles, probably the most influential writers and researchers in the field at present. It is because of their importance that I have chosen to quote from their work, but there are plenty of others to whom my comments could be addressed

David SIVIERAn Alien Vice: Human Sexuality and the Pornography of Abduction
The following essay is an attempt to establish the parallel role and content of the abduction narrative and pornography. By this I do not mean that the numerous books, articles and documentaries allegedly reporting the true abduction and sexual abuse pf humans by extraterrestrial beings are deliberately written to provoke sexual arousal. Indeed, I sincerely I hope this is not the case. Nevertheless, like pornography it is a literature with a strong sexual content, using many of its themes and motifs, originating squarely to address human psychologioal needs and fulfilling some of its social functions

Gareth J. MEDWAYTHE CASE FOR FENCE SITTING - part 2
Instead, for the most part, it is read by people who already share the author's opinion, and want to be confirmed in their views; and this is as true of what appears in Magonia as what appears in UFO Magazine
3-7

John HARNEYIF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TONIGHT - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN THE SITGREAVES NATIONAL FOREST, ARIZONA?
Some UFO stories have been exposed as hoaxes, and others can easily be explained as hoaxes. lt is often difficult, though, to persuade most ufologists that a particular story is a hoax, because, as they want to believe the story, they fail to notice or deliberately ignore false assertions or logical contradictions in the story as it is presented to them. Sceptics, on the other hand, too often seem to take the view that the details don't really matter, and that if the alleged witnesses had obvious motives for hoaxing then that must be the explanation. An excellent example of a UFO event where investigators failed to get to the heart of the matter because they were too busy pursuing their own agendas was the alleged abduction of Travis Walton in the Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona, on 5 November 1975.

They moved from Lansdown Road in Cheltenham, the town where they had been living for the previous half dozen or so years to another rented house at Pittville Circus Road on the corner of All Saints Road a 'typical modern residence, square and commonplace in appearance'

Flying saucers mostly just flew around when they arrived in 1947. They didn't land much and we did not see much of who was piloting them. Only 4 or 5 such cases have been found we might fairly term CE3Ks. This contrasts sharply with the Airship Waves of 1896/97 where researchers have found 36 detailed CE3Ks, at east 14 of which are explicitly extraterrestrial. A few more seem to be so implicitly

Chris AUBECKDesperately Seeking Rudolf
This article describes my attempts to trace an incident of 'time travel' or 'teleportation' that allegedly took place in New York many years ago. Mike McHUGHConspiracy Theory in American History
I was reading through the Feature Review on witchcraft books on the Magonia Website, where I was pleased to find a review of one of Robert Thurston's books. Thurston was one of my professors in graduate school and I was an assistant in one of his classes on Modern Russian H istory, which is his speciality. He always theorised that the Stalinist purges and show trials of the 1 930s were very similar to the witchcraft persecution of the 1 6th and 17th Centuries, in the sense that the masses really DID believe that agents of evil were at work in both cases: literal agents of the Devil in the witchcraft trials versus agents of Germany, Japan and other imperialist powers in the case of Stalin's Russia. In other words, the ruling elite did not simply orchestrate these situations, and even shared in the delusions themselves, in a mutually reinforcing cycle of paranoia.

In March 1980, a young rural Pennsylvania couple was interviewed concerning an experience they shared aboard an alien craft. A person attending a lecture on UFOs given by Eugenie Macer-Story told her about the couple’s experiences. She travelled to their home – they had no telephone – and they cordially allowed her to tape the story of their encounters with the aliens. Frank and Alice had not contacted any UFO organisation and there was no use of hypnosis at any point preceding or during Macer-Story’s interview.

Ever since Vallee and Keel put pen, or typewriter ribbon to paper in the 70s, it's been an axiom among proponents of the psychosocial hypothesis that the UFO phenomenon is merely the modem variant of a range of paranormal encounters and visitations by supernatural others. Despite their technological trappings, modem UFO sightings are merely the scientistic expression of deep religious and mystical impulses from within the human psyche, impulses, which have given rise to previous ages' myths of encounters with angels, demons, elves and ghosts.

Michael McHUGHAlien Mimicry in Popular Culture
If aliens ever came to earth to trade, raid or simply take pictures for Galactic Geographic magazine, it always seemed to me that they would do so by disguising themselves and their technology in such a way that they simply blended in with the natives as much as possible. Either that, or they would hire locals to do much of the work for them and act as guides and interpreters. Even on earth, people who need to work or do business in foreign countries do this all the time, and also try to learn something of the native language and customs before they go.
