Gerson S. PAIVA, C.A. TAFTHessdalen Lights and Piezoelectricity from Rock Strain 265-271
Abstract: Hessdalen lights (HL) are unexplained light balls usually seen in the valley of Hessdalen, Norway. Some theories, such as that of Takaki and Ikeya, explain HL as a product of piezoelectricity generated under a rock strain because many crystal rocks include quartz grains which produce an intense charge density. In this work, based on the dusty plasma theory of HL (Paiva and Taft), we suggest that piezoelectricity of quartz cannot explain a peculiar property assumed by the HL phenomenon—the presence of geometrical structures in its center.

B. REISWIG, D. SCHULZE-MAKUCHThe Desire for the Development of Flight: A Recurrent Theme for Advanced Civilizations? 329-345
Abstract: The desire to fl y is a recurrent theme in human civilizations. This fascination has led to the achievement of heavier-than-air fl ight in modern times and possibly in ancient history as well. Oral traditions and ancient manuscripts from around the world contain many detailed references to fl ying machines of various types. Many different artifacts, recovered in the course of normal archaeological excavations, also display many mechanical and aerodynamic features. The worldwide distribution of these artifacts, written manuscripts, and traditions suggests that some civilizations perhaps developed, or were about to develop, fl ying machines. Thus, fascination and attempts with fl ight seem to be a recurring theme for the human species.

Historical Perspectives
Massimo BIONDIMarco Levi Bianchini: A Forgotten Italian Supporter of Parapsychology 323-328
Abstract: —For different reasons, many of the past Italian psychical researchers are only half known or are completely forgotten today. This is the case of the neuropsychiatrist Marco Levi Bianchini, who worked in the fi rst half of the 20th century. Beside his conventional clinical activity, he was engaged in a lot of different topics, but at present he is remembered fi rst of all to have been the fi rst, or one of the fi rst, professionals to introduce and promote psychoanalytic doctrine in Italy. Levi Bianchini was very interested in, and looked with favour on, metapsychical issues, and in particular psi cognitive phenomena. He published a few papers on telepathic and precognitive dreams, and he adhered to the ideas that Cazzamalli was developing about some asserted brain radio-emissions that should be able to explain effects such as dowsing, telepathy, and precognition. More than his original contributions to the parapsychology literature, an undoubted historical merit of Marco Levi Bianchini was his job as a book reviewer, which he performed during all his life, introducing to the academic and psychiatric circles in Italy hundreds of international and national books on parapsychological topics, therefore greatly promoting this culture in the country.

David M. JACOBSA Brief History of Abduction Research 69-77
Abstract: UFO abductions have been a part of the UFO phenomenon since the early years of public awareness of sightings. Although academics and scientists began to study UFO abduction, over the years cultural events and non–evidencebased theories provided barriers to academic and scientifi c inquiry into it. In spite of the lack of academic interest, the phenomenon continues unabated and unaffected by societal events.

Jean-François BAURE, David CLARKE, Paul FULLER, Martin SHOUGHUnusual Atmospheric Phenomena Observed Near Channel Islands, UK, 23 April 2007 291-308
Abstract: Unusual atmospheric phenomena (UAPs) were observed in daylight by multiple observers on board two civil aircraft in widely separated locations. We summarise results of an investigation based on radio communications reporting events in real time to Air Traffic Control (ATC), ATC radar and weather radar recordings, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) documents, witness interviews and statements, and other sources. We describe attempts to explain the phenomena with the help of expert specialist advisers and professional resources in the fields of meteorology, atmospheric optics, oceanography and geophysics. We are able to show that widespread media stories describing enormous phenomena up to a mile wide and detected by radar were based on speculation and misunderstandings. Many news reports were grossly exaggerated and inaccurate. However, we are unable to conclusively identify the UAPs observed. It proves possible to eliminate a number of theories with a fairly high level of confidence, leaving us with two types of phenomena—a rare atmospheric-optical effect or an earthquake precursor—both of which have the potential to explain at least some, although not all, features of the reports. We highlight certain features that appear to leave open the possibility of unusual physical processes.

Peter A. STURROCKThe Role of Anomalies in Scientific Exploration 241-260
Abstract: Anomalies play a key role in science, in calling into question some established belief: an anomaly is an anomaly only with respect to some hypothesis, theory, or belief system. Some anomalies (OK Anomalies) are greeted with interest and investigated vigorously, some (Not-OK Anomalies) are avoided or viewed with suspicion, and others (Sleeping Anomalies) may for some time go unnoticed. In this article, anomalies are viewed from the perspective of scientific inference. This requires that we compare the anomaly with a logically complete set of hypotheses, and that assessments of the evidence for the anomaly, and of its compatibility (or incompatibility) with various hypotheses, be expressed in terms of probabilities. Some anomalies may present a challenge to our "model of reality." (These are normally viewed as "Not-OK.") Identifying our "standard model of reality" makes it possible (and necessary) to identify alternative models so as to form a logically complete set of hypotheses.

Michael D. SWORDSUfology: What Have We Learned? 545-589
Abstract: A reasonable case can be made that those of us who have dedicated a serious amount of research time to the study of ufology have learned the following: 1. That the phenomenon is a true, ongoing mystery, and is deserving of serious study; 2. How it has happened that even good (open-minded) scientists have been thrown off the subject; 3. That the "Extraterrestrial Hypothesis" (ETH) may be able to serve as a working model for what is going on but not in any simple-minded form; 4. That the field is almost impossible to study in any "conservative" (physical sciencesllab-top) type of way, barring rare cases of certain "close encounters." There are many other historical, sociological, epistemological things that we have learned. This review will focus its remarks around the four categories mentioned above.

Peter F. COLEMANA Unified Theory of Ball Lightning and Unexplained Atmospheric Lights 215-238
Abstract: Ball lightning has been observed in close proximity to atmospheric vortices such as tornadoes and weaker vortices. In some events it is difficult for eyewitnesses to differentiate between the two phenomena. Excluding a chance association, two causal possibilities present themselves. The first is that the vortex is somehow manufacturing ball lightning and its nature is, as yet, unknown. The second option is that ball lightning is a burning vortex (also referred to in this paper as a 'vortex fireball') in a continuum ranging from a small-scale (centimeters) to a large-scale (meters) vortex. Unusual luminosity is sometimes observed in vortices and this provides a clue to the ball lightning problem. Although one past suggestion used the electrical discharge hypothesis as a mechanism to illuminate a vortex, there is another possibility. The hypothesis is that gaseous combustion within the confines of vortex breakdown could account for ball lightning and other unexplained atmospheric lights. Given the large air speeds that exist inside tornadoes the only viable mechanism would be that of ignition and continued combustion of a flammable fuel gas taking place within the low air speed, stagnation zone of vortex breakdown. Field evidence from meteorological reports and elsewhere suggest that such a vortex-combustion phenomenon exists. The theory has the added support of experimental demonstration of combustion within vortex breakdown. In addition to ball lightning, the theory can be applied to understand and interpret several difficult-to-explain UFOs

Matteo LEONEQuestioning Answers on the Hessdalen Phenomenon 39-68
Abstract: ccording to a recent paper on a long-term scientific survey (codenamed EMBLA Project), an anomalous atmospheric luminous phenomenon of well-defined physical characteristics (optical radiant power up to 19 kW, three well-distinguished peaks about 50 nm wide, dimensions ranging from decimetres up to 30 m, etc.) is reportedly occurring on a daily basis in the Hessdalen valley in Norway. Although photographic and eyewitness evidence supporting the actual existence of so far unexplained low atmospheric phenomena in the Hessdalen valley does exist, the phenomenological picture obtained by the EMBLA scientists is shown to be largely questionable and explainable as unrecognised vehicle headlamps.

George M. EBERHARTMysterious Creatures: Creating a Cryptozoological Encyclopedia 103-113
Abstract: Reference books usually begin by defining the boundaries of a field of study, followed by consistent descriptions of specific topics. In a field as diffuse and interdisciplinary as cryptozoology, these tasks are not as simple as they might seem, even for someone who has been following the subject for more than 40 years. In preparing Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology for publication in 2002, I began by asking such basic questions as: What is cryptozoology? What categories of unknown animals do cryptozoologists study? How do they go about evaluating testimony and information resources? In answering these questions, I was able to decide on the content and arrangement of this comprehensive encyclopedia of cryptids.
